Overview

I am a recently qualified yoga teacher based in north-west London. I'm 52 years old.

My journey working with the body began as a ballet teacher in North Wales (British Ballet Organisation) teaching students from 3 to 18. I went on to complete a first-class degree in contemporary dance at Roehampton University where I studied Martha Graham, Merce Cunningham and Doris Humphrey techniques. It was there that I became fascinated by the connection between breath and movement, but I hadn't yet realised that these masters of modern dance had borrowed much from the world of yoga.

I danced (not professionally) at advanced level for many years before discovering yoga two years ago in India and realising that I had been unwittingly practicing it as part of my dance training. We just didn't call it Downward Dog! This led me to throw myself passionately into the practice and I ended up completing my 200 hour training in May 2019 at Sampoorna Yoga School in Goa, and then my Yin Yoga TTC in November 2019.

After throwing myself a little too much into practice I injured my shoulder and discovered the concept of 'Ahimsa' (non-violence) and its centrality to yoga practice. I had hurt my body by over practice and incorrect practice and I learned that I needed to be kind to my body and let it heal.

As a result I am an Ahimsa teacher who will encourage students to treat their bodies with kindness. Even with my dance training I am not as flexible as other people so I have to work with modified poses. I will bring the knowledge I've gained through modification to help people who are nervous of joining a yoga class because they think they're not good enough.

Everyone is good enough.
