Overview

I'm Claire and I've been teaching yoga for over ten years. Full-time since 2018. I started my teacher training in Iyengar Yoga back in 2010 and then after a few years living overseas, on my return, I completed a Yoga Diploma in 2015 at YogaCampus. I am in the final stages of completing a specialist 150 hour Yoga Wellness Educator Course focused on Yoga for the older body. Teaching in my local community in Buckinghamshire over the last two years, I have realised that there is a huge demand for yoga for beginners who are aged 50+. This is borne out by research in the US which shows that the 50+ age group is the second fastest growing age group to take up yoga. I have focused my teaching on beginners who are learning yoga for the first time in their 50s (my youth section) who commonly have a very sedentary life, sitting at a desk all day at work. They benefit from yoga for postural improvement, keeping them mobile, flexible and strong but also learning how to relax. I also work with retirees aged 65+ who benefit from a focus on building strength and balance as well as maintaining range of movement and keeping all joints moving as they were designed to. These age groups require specialised knowledge and adaptations as everybody comes with at least half a century of history! But whatever their age they can see positive progress as long as they have a practice that is tailored to their physical requirements.

I'm inspired by my students of all ages. We have a light hearted approach. My style is to motivate and encourage people no matter what their starting point is. People's physical age does not always correspond to their chronological age and so my classes are focused more on where people are physically than what age they are. And wherever they are yoga always has the potential to support them in maintaining an active lifestyle. Some of my classes are mat based, some are chair based and all practices include props. Currently all my classes are on Zoom or socially distanced outside.

I am also working on a range of courses for these age groups focused on helping people manage their own wellness including:

Yoga for Postural Improvement
Yoga for Better Sleep
Yoga for Maintaining a Healthy Spine
Yoga for Osteopenia and Osteoporosis
