Little Britain Strikes Again!

Little Britain Strikes Again!

Just as the world celebrates UNESCO’S decision to recognize YOGA as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, here in the UK, Skills Active have joined forces with the British Wheel of Yoga in an attempt to align yoga with fitness, beauty and hairdressing.

The inscription and classification of Yoga as a ‘human treasure’ brings immense recognition to Yoga and underlines its role as a social practice, an oral tradition and a system of ancient and scientific knowledge facilitating an enhanced harmony and peace across caste, creed, gender, age and nationality.

Yoga practitioners throughout the world can look forward to a brighter future where freedoms mediated by community standards eventually triumph over academic, vocational and sports and fitness coaching industry standards. Except that is in the UK, where yoga is to be straightjacketed under a set of narrow regulations designed by business people known as Skills Active, clearly ignorant of Yoga’s significance in the world arena.

Vikas Swarup, an Indian Foreign Minister spokesman, stated ‘The inscription enables a bottom up empowerment and takes the spotlight towards the numerous institutions and communities in India disseminating this ancient tradition’. ‘In a world bristling with mania, madness and mental distress, the ancient Indian practice of yoking together of mind and body, has emerged as a harbinger of physical vigour, mental serenity and spiritual radiance’.

The question for you, teachers of yoga is this: Do you want to be part of an exciting and enlightening movement towards wholeness and contentment, or do you want to be part of a movement which views yoga as just another business opportunity to be marketed along with the cosmetics industry?
