Julia Hankins
Experienced Yoga Teacher, Mindfulness Coach, MSc in Mental Health and Well-being in Education
I have been practicing yoga all of my adult life and I am not exaggerating when I say that it has saved my sanity!
In 2010 I completed British Wheel of Yoga's foundation one and two and incorporated much of yoga philosophy into my everyday life. As a primary school teacher, I had a pretty stressful job, I found that yoga helped me over come anxiety. I also liked to use yoga techniques in my classroom with children and found it a valuable tool to untap creativity, boost focus, enhance confidence and create a culture of calm.
In 2017 I made the decision to train as a children and family yoga teacher. I taught yoga to children and families part time, alongside teaching in schools. I loved using yoga as a tool for connection in families and loved my regular parent and baby, parent and toddler and family yoga sessions. This lead on to teaching after school clubs for primary aged children and then a very natural progression into teaching yoga and mindfulness within the school day.
Following further training in mindfulness and chair yoga, in 2020 I committed to my business full time, creating my own wellbeing education consultancy, designing and delivering workshops and training to improve mental health and well-being in schools and homes. I also embarked upon a master's degree in Mental Health and Well-Being in Education, to deepen my knowledge in this area.
For my dissertation I conducted research into the use of yoga in the primary classroom, the findings of which confirmed what I already knew from my own personal experience...yoga in schools is a transformative tool. Achieving a distinction in my master's degree in 2022 was a proud moment for me and validated my conviction that this is the right path for me.
2022 was a big year for me, as I also completed my 250hr adult yoga certification. I now offer adult yoga events too and feel passionately about sharing the practices that have been so helpful for my own mental health. My adult workshops are best described as gentle and calming- medicine for the nervous system. I like to incorporate aspects such as positive psychology and mindfulness into my adult events.
