How To Name Your Business

Choosing a name for your yoga business can be tricky! Here are some pointers to consider:

Domain names - Is the domain name available for your chosen name? Or is something similar free? Your business name and domain do not need to match. However, it is easier for customers to find your website if the domain name is related in some way. For reference, a domain name is a digital website address. (For example, ours is yogaallianceprofessionals.org)

Similar/same names - Run a Google search of your preferred business name. Is someone else already using this name? Note, if you are choosing a brand name that is the same as another business, you could be hit with a cease and desist.

Using your own name - Check if someone with the same name is doing something similar,  would you want to be confused with them? We'd highly recommend not using your name as a business name, as this may limit your growth in the future (i.e you may not be able to expand and hire other yoga teachers).

Trademark - Are you able to trademark your name? This is relevant if you select a brand name. If you are set on Unicorn Yoga, check if you can trademark the name. This prevents someone else from using your name.

Words - Consider the length of your name. A name with lots of letters is tricky to fit on a logo and could be mistyped in your email/domain addresses. What does your name mean in other languages/your chosen language? Are the words easy to remember, pronounce, and spell? If they are not, word of mouth can be tricky as your students will talk about how great you are, and their peer group cannot find you. Is your name distinctive?

Words you cannot use - you cannot use words considered sensitive or imply a connection with the government or local authorities unless you get permission. For example, to use ‘Accredited’ in your business name, you need permission from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
