I was introduced to yoga by my mother as a resistant teenager. My first yoga teacher was Diana Lampden, a Quaker who had come to Derry in Northern Ireland with her husband John to support the peace process during the conflict in the 1970's. I found the practices very beneficial; grounding in and feeling the body, quieting the mind and learning to relax. This approach still resonates with me today and I love teaching yoga practices supporting people to find peace of mind and relaxation as well as the many physical benefits.
I have always been interested in developing human potential and have been meditating for over twenty-five years. I was involved with a spiritual organisation called Blue Star for twelve years where I was taught many different limbs of yoga including pranayama, meditation, chanting, energy body anatomy as well as hatha yoga from Sri Vasudeva, an experienced kundalini master. I qualified as a yoga teacher in 2011 at the yoga therapy and training centre under Majella McIntyre and completed Level 2 with Majella in 2012. I completed a yoga tutor’s training qualification in 2014 and have taught philosophy, subtle anatomy and pranayama on various local yoga teacher training courses.
I have been teaching yoga and mindfulness in local community groups since qualifying as a teacher often working in more marginalised groups. I am currently setting up a yoga teacher training to support the healing of trauma and issues of mental health that have been a legacy of the conflict here.
I have a degree in psychology and a postgraduate qualification in restorative practices in education. Other qualifications include facilitation skills, advanced group work skills, community relations, process-oriented psychology, solution focused counselling, training the trainer, emotional intelligence, and leadership. I am also a mentor for early school leavers.
