I started practising Ashtanga Yoga at ‘On the Mat’ with Celeste Lau in 2000 when I lived in Singapore.
On return to the UK I searched around for an inspiring teacher and started going to classes led by Jane Piddington, Ashtanga Yoga Glastonbury, I loved her supportive and gently challenging way of teaching - I then started to gradually increase my commitment to practise. Jane decided to start offering teacher training, (Ashtanga Yoga Glastonbury Teacher Training 200 hour Diploma course, accredited by Yoga Alliance Professionals) in 2016 and encouraged me to join her first group of trainee teachers. I really had no intention of teaching – I just wanted to further my own practise – really!
So, of course, I am now teaching in local village halls, in a local gym and to private clients. I have also started teaching online using Zoom, prompted by the Covid-19 pandemic. I have been delighted by the demand for yoga locally and it is so wonderful to see how much difference people can feel by starting to practise yoga, even once a week. My clients have a wide age range and my classes have to reflect that, so they include elements of the Ashtanga primary series used in vinyasa krama, exploring asanas in different ways each week.
I have also completed an 80 hour Yoga Alliance accredited Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training course with Bristol City Yoga. It is very much part of my journey – I qualified with the National Childbirth Trust as an antenatal teacher in 1999 and worked as a teacher and as a doula in Singapore so teaching pregnancy yoga will be a natural extension. I have already had a number of pregnant women attending my yoga classes and it is great to be able to confidently support them in their practise.
So, that is me, practising, teaching and studying yoga with great enjoyment and fulfilment.
