Join Tara Lee and Clare Daniell in this YAPTA workshop to understand the basic principles of teaching yoga to pregnant women.

Do you feel anxious when a student turns up to your class and announces they are pregnant?

Would you like to feel more confident that you can offer the right advice about how they should practice?

Many yoga teacher training courses don’t prepare you to teach pregnant women and yet at some point you probably find pregnant students turning up unexpectedly to join your regular yoga classes. This is such an important time during a woman’s life and yoga can be so beneficial to help avoid aches and pains and encourage women to nurture themselves and their babies.

Many YTT courses don't prepare you to teach pregnant women. This YAPTA workshop will give you more understanding of how to teach women who are pregnant safely when they come to your classes. You will also be able to advise a student when a yoga class may not be suitable during their pregnancy. Early pregnancy and the journey to motherhood is such an important time during a woman's life and yoga that is attuned to the pregnant body can be so beneficial. Join us to learn how to support pregnancy and encourage mothers to nurture themselves and their babies.

During this workshop we will look at:

  • What stages of pregnancy should you allow pregnant women into your class and why.
  • Which yoga postures aren’t appropriate to practice and why.
  • Why you need to modify yoga postures for pregnancy by looking at the physiological changes that take place.
  • How to adapt certain postures including sun salutations.

Topics include:

  • Why yoga is so beneficial during pregnancy
  • What should you avoid teaching pregnant students and which symptoms are considered ‘red flags’?
  • Hormonal changes of pregnancy, what you need to know as a yoga teacher.
  • Which pranayama techniques are safe and helpful during pregnancy and which should be avoided?
  • What are the options for Savasana during pregnancy and why?

Learning outcomes:

  • Know the basic principles of how pregnancy affects yoga practice
  • Feel more confident to teach and integrate pregnant women into your general classes safely.
  • Have a better understanding of the changes that are occurring during pregnancy and how this informs the way we teach pregnant students.
