On a recent visit to India, American yoga practitioner Tara Stiles held forth on the benefits of daily yoga practice
Yoga is not about whether you can do a handstand or not. It’s about finding the ease in your body so you can connect to yourself. One mistake that people make is thinking that yoga is rigid, stressful and intense, according to American yoga ‘rebel’ Tara Stiles who recently visited Mumbai. “A lot of people don’t practice it because they feel it’s not for them. If they are not flexible, they can’t bend their body in a certain position and get intimidated right away,” she said in an interview.

Why make it a habit
Yoga helps you take good care of yourself, and have better relationships. Said Stiles, “A relaxed and happy mind is better able to cope with sensitive issues. Yoga keeps the mind peaceful and content, and so helps strengthen the bonds you share with people. With daily practice, you are less stressed, have a better mind and body connection. When you practice yoga, you become sensitised to how you feel. You know your body better and what you are hungry for.”

Yoga improves your immunity. The poses massage the organs and strengthen the muscles; the breathing techniques of pranayama and meditation release unpleasantness and restlessness that manifest as ailments.

Get into the habit
Get up in the morning and do 5-10 minutes right out of bed. Do simple asanas when you come home from work or an hour before hitting bed. Set a small bag aside that has all the essentials for your practice. It could include a yoga mat, a towel, a water bottle and a change of clothes. If you pack your bag in advance, you can be ready.

This will make it easier to just pick up and go – to your class or a park.
