MUDRAS

-------------------------------------------------------------------

Mudras are subtle physical movements involving the hands, the head, a posture, a bandha and adhara

In Sanskrit the word mudra means a 'gesture' or 'attitude and it is believed that students of yogic practices such as mudras can feel a subtle energy flow circulating within their individual being and greater connection to the cosmic source.

Mudras are considered as higher, or more advanced practices which lead to awakening of the pranas, chakras and kundalini, and that which can bestow psychic powers on the advanced practitioner.  In scientific terms, mudras can influence the individuals primal and instinctive habit patterns with the brain.  Each mudra corresponds to a different link and can have a different corresponding effect on the physical, mental and energetic layers of the human body.

The Chin mudra is the most recognised hasta (hand) gesture within the modern world with images of yogis in sukasana and hands resting on the knees.  The image is that of stillness and peace.

The Chin Mudra connects the index fingers to the root of the thumbs with the palms facing upwards and resting on the kness.  Chin Mudra is said to be the psychic gesture of consciousness and should be adopted when practising meditation. When the index finger touches the thumb a circuit is produced which allows the energy that would otherwise be absorbed by the environment around us to travel back through the body and up to the brain.  When the hands are then placed gently on the knees another pranic circuit helps to redirect and sustain this energy into the body resulting in a more intensified nurturing and healing experience within the five subtle layers of the individual.
