Can I teach classes as a trainee?

Yes! It's encouraged that you start to get experience teaching while on your training course. There are some conditions.

Why This Matters

Teaching while in training can be a valuable part of learning, but it also carries responsibility. These conditions protect students, support safe delivery, and make sure you’re practising within appropriate boundaries.

Insurance and local legal requirements may also apply, depending on where you live.

What This Means for You

If you want to teach while you’re still training, you must:

  • Get approval from your Principal Teacher (or training provider) before you teach

  • Teach only within the scope of what you’ve already been taught on your course

  • Have regular supervision and/or ongoing consultation in place with your Principal Teacher

  • Tell students in advance that you are a trainee and not yet fully qualified

  • Charge fees only if your tutor or school approves, and keep fees modest (lower than a qualified, experienced professional would typically charge)

  • Hold appropriate insurance if you are a UK or Irish resident (and follow local laws if you live elsewhere).

What You Need To Do

  1. Speak to your Principal Teacher and get clear approval to teach as a trainee.

  2. Confirm your scope: only plan and deliver what you’ve already been trained to teach.

  3. Put supervision in place with your Principal Teacher (regular check-ins or ongoing consultation).

  4. Update your class wording so students are told in advance that you are a trainee.

  5. Agree your pricing with your tutor/school and keep it modest.

  6. Check local insurance requirements as well as your local laws and regulations.

General

If you’re a UK or Irish resident, you must have insurance in place before teaching.

If your course is 200 hours with 180 contact hours, you may be eligible for trainee insurance with your Yoga Pros.
