WHAT WE TEACH

Asana

Most yoga journeys begin with Asana, you will explore in detail, alignment, breath and development of inner focus. We will cover the traditional Hatha yoga postures and how they have progressed into vinyasa styles including the more linear approach of the Ashtanga Vinyasa sequence.

The course will cover

Sun salutations

Standing and balancing postures

Forward bends

Backward bends

Twists

Inversions.

It will also address how breath can be synchronised with movement.  You will learn how to create intelligent, anatomically informed sequences both dynamic (vinyasa) to more restorative styles, so you can teach variations appropriate for different levels and individuals. You will also learn how to assist and support students with hands on adjustments and verbal cues.

During training you will develop your own practice which will include daily contemplation pranayama, asana and the ability to self inquire.

Experiential learning is key. From doing the poses yourself and adjusting one another your learning will deepen as you discuss with your fellow trainee teachers. Added to this will be important anatomical and structural functioning of the body.

As your awareness and understanding of each posture deepens, so will your confidence to teach. Yoga asana, can be observed from its physical gross body in flexibility and strength, to the more subtle energetic body opening up the channels of awareness. The vinyasa system helps to shift the activity of the nervous system and build a better relationship to the breath and build strength in the pelvic floor/core.

Pranayama

Pranayama is the fourth limb of Patanjali’s eight-limb system (Ashtanga). Its importance is acknowledged in many classical texts, but rarely is it taught correctly. It is a subtle practice that has tremendous effects on the nervous system and the mind. This course is grounded in the classical teaching of Sri O.P. Tiwari (Kaivalyadhama, India), one of the few authorities on Pranayama.

You will learn how working with the breath is an important foundation of any practice. Pranayama can be a both a tool for health and also in mastering the mind. It is correct and effective breathing that aids yoga asana, reduces stress and much more. With step by step instruction you will develop a self practice and will therefore be encouraged to teach Pranayama from your own experience.  You will learn the importance of preparatory exercises together with six of the classic techniques.

Upon completion, you will understand the nature of the

  • Inhale, Exhale, and Retention

  • Correct performance of each Pranayama

  • How to guide someone in basic breathing

  • Science of the breath and its affect on the nervous system.
