Overview

Hello ,

I am Jac Godfrey.  I was also named 'Sita Devi' by my own teacher earlier on in my teaching journey.

In terms of my own practice and teaching, I definitely adhere to and enjoy traditional, 'un-watered-down' yoga.  This means that you will get to experience a lot of beautiful Sanskrit , whether it's me sharing and teaching you a Sutra, or a sloka from the Bhagavad Gita, or devotional Kirtan chanting.  I often lead Kirtans at the yoga school which I established, www.mokshalayoga.co.uk.

So there's this obsession with what 'style' of yoga a teacher teaches...often this is referring to the physical practice (asana) only.  It's a question that rather makes me groan as for me there is only one yoga. Yoga is Yoga. Yoga is not asana...

I was originally trained in India in 2006 at the Sivananda Yoga and Vedanta Ashram, in Kerala.  This is where you surrender to a traditional life of Guru and student, with a full and thorough range of training in Kriya (cleansing practices), Pranayama (breath & energy control), Asana (posture) , Shastra ( yogic scriptural study), Anatomy & Physiology, Meditation as well as daily Karma Yoga , which is taking one's part.   My own teacher , Swami Govindananda was a direct student of Swami Vishnu and Swami Sivananda who founded the method.  Whilst I do teach classes in Sivananda Yoga at Mokshala, any class you ever come to will be informed , even if not explicitly, by the classic yoga path.

In 2009 to 2010 I spent a year studying Vinyasa flow (krama) with Claire Missingham as I loved the dynamic movement which enhances energy flow.

I'm also Level 4 British Wheel of Yoga accredited: my specialisms included Restorative Yoga and advanced biomechanics (with 'Yoga Sports Science' , an internationally renowned academy)

However I was literally knocked into orbit by the method of Jivamukti Yoga.  In Jivamukti Yoga absolutely no part of yoga is left un-charted. An experience of Jivamukti Yoga will always include lots of yoga Philosophy and spiritual discourse, Sanskrit mantra and chanting, rigorous physical sequences (some good strong vinyasa not unlike Ashtanga) , meditation, a rockin' playlist as well as deep relaxation with a Jivamukti Savasana massage...what's not to love?

I trained in India in the Jivamukti Method with Jules Febre, Ruth Lauer-Manenti and the founders , Sharon Gannon and David Life.

My yoga school, Mokshala, in Saffron Walden is a Jivamukti Yoga affiliate Studio.

I also love to practice and teach Yin Yoga.

Who inspires me?

Mark Stevens who runs Yoga Studio Ely (my beloved Jivamukti and Sivananda teacher)

Gregor Maehle - because I truly appreciate his zest for advocating teaching traditional yogic meditation rather than using any random form of meditation to complement asana practice.

Andrea Kwiatkowski. my mentor and guide. Andrea is a teacher whose wisdom transcends any particular 'style' , although she is a world-known Jivamukti teacher.  Of course the Swamis of the Sivananda lineage and Sharon Gannon and David Life, founders of Jivamukti Yoga.

What do I do :

* manage and direct Mokshala Yoga and Meditation Centre which I opened in 2018.

* teach classes in Jivamukti, Yin Yoga and Sivananda Yoga

* run workshops and courses aimed at Yoga teachers to deepen and broaden their own palette of experience to include the potency of  more traditional practices

* run yoga and meditation retreats and spiritual yatra both in the UK and worldwide

Sanskrit course parts 1 & 2. I have now attended two courses learning Sanskrit with Jac and I am amazed at how quickly I have begun to understand this wonderful language and recognise the Devanagari script. Jac is the best teacher. Her instruction is clear precise and is delivered with great passion and enthusiasm for the importance of the Sanskrit language. Lessons are always so much fun and I look forward to every class which is taught in such an easy and beautiful manner. I thoroughly recommend these courses to anybody interested in Yoga, it’s history and language.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two Sanskrit courses that I took with Jacqueline. As a student teacher I thought it was very important to gain an understanding of Sanskrit as part of my yoga studies. The course was made interesting and informative and it is obvious that Jac has a deep knowledge and respect for what is a beautiful and ancient language. Her enthusiasm and encouragement was infectious and I would definitely be on board for any future courses or workshops. Jac is also an amazing Jivamukti teacher and her classes are wonderful.

if you have an interest in learning Sanskrit as an oral language or to understand Devanagari script to read sacred texts, mantras, slokas etc then I can highly recommend Jac's Sanskrit Sundays as an introduction to the subject. We learnt the different letters of the Sanskrit alphabet organised into their phonetic properties; practiced writing, reciting and recognising letters and words in a safe and non competitive environment. Jac has an extensive knowledge on the subject and is a dedicated yogi whose love and enthusiasm for Sanskrit is clearly evident.

Sanskrit Sunday’s,as both Sanskrit level 1and 2 were named. These courses were taught online live and recorded enabling us to revisit each session as often as needed.Invaluable! This was during the time when we were unable to be with our teachers in person because of lockdown. Level 1,taken over 4 weeks was about learning the Sanskrit Alphabet, by listening, repeating and understanding the different types of sound and writing the Devanagari script. Each week there was also a little homework which was optional. Level 2 was taken over 5 weeks, now going deeper and expanding on our knowledge thus far. Both level 1 and level 2 were beautifully presented and taught with great clarity and I felt supported throughout. I highly recommend this extremely knowledgeable teacher Jac Godfrey and both courses. Every sound in Sanskrit has spiritual implications. It’s own unique power
