Teacher’s workshop - assisting practitioners
Start Date
04/05/2019
End Date
04/05/2019

This 3 hour workshop is one of a series of workshops designed to support and resource yoga teachers specifically with regards to the use of assists in class - verbal both verbal and hands-on - as well as suitable modifications.

The teacher's skill and ability to create and hold a safe space in which practitioners can explore their own practice, whether this is in the more individual setting of an assisted self practice class or a multi level guided class, is so important.
Whilst we will be working with asanas from the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga tradition, this workshop is open to yoga teachers of any tradition and many of the asanas will be familiar to everyone.

The main aim of this first workshop will be observation of different body patterns, midline awareness, when and how different types of assists can be supportive and helpful for practitioners. We will look at both active and passive range of movement and how we can most effectively support practitioners to work in a way that builds strength and stability as well as flexibility.

Limited to a small group of 6 people maximum, to allow for plenty of individual attention, we will work as both as a group and in pairs, to explore different ways to assist practitioners. There will also be an opportunity to discuss other important aspects to this subject, such as the use of language and communication between teacher and practitioner and the importance of consent to any hands-on assists from practitioners.

We will look at a number of asanas in detail in order to explore patterns of movement and the relationship between different asanas e.g. how some of the standing asanas relate to those in the seated sequences. We will also start to look a little bit more deeply at when it is useful to use a vinyasa krama approach to teaching specific asanas by breaking down the the movements into a progressive sequence so that practitioners understand the fundamental foundations of a posture.
