The Art of Yoga Sequencing

Sequencing is often described as art.  A well sequenced class has a clear architecture, logic or framework which underpins the asanas within it. There are many ideas of sequencing out there. The ‘art’ part describes your creativity, or your theme, that you wish to bring out and teach about in your class. Getting the sequencing right means you not only create a safe class to practice, it enables you to take the student(s) on a journey and provide them with a well rounded yoga experience.

This course will help you explore and establish your idea of sequencing, double checking your framework to create inspiring, well-rounded and safe yoga classes. We will look at the Spiralling Crow sequencing framework and how we use this to sequence our classes. Using your teaching experience and your own Yoga practice (Sadhana) as inspiration, you will explore what you want to teach (whether it is a theme, peak pose, or something else), ideas of creativity and how to bring that out in your sequencing with clarity. You will become confident in interweaving your theme or message with your Asana sequence to be clear about the purpose of class. There are different sequencing methodologies and we will look at some of these, as well as exploring how to progress your sequence for more or less experienced students.

The course will blend theory and practice supported by group discussion and review session. There will be some homework assignments.

Hands On Assists in Yoga

Every aspect of the teacher being in the room is about assisting students. This ranges from how the teacher acts when meeting students, how they walk, sit and talk in the room, and how they instruct students into and out of Asana and finally how they touch students and give physical cues to assist Asana and transitions.

In this course we will learn how to develop our observations skills, both physical and energetic, use our knowledge or Asana and anatomy of the body to ascertain the intention and alignment needed to assist with confidence and ease with common postural habits and misalignments. These assists will support students finding an experience of freedom, stability and strength in their poses. We will develop our verbal assists and then combine verbal with physical assists to impact the learning and retention of your students. There are modifications that apply to different levels of experience as well as different body types and are useful for online and hybrid teaching. We will study how to touch with confidence, safety and integrity. We will discuss issues of anxiety and trauma in students.

There will be plenty of time to put theory into practice, with lots of time for practical. The breaks between the modules allows teachers to return to their classes and use the assists and come back with questions.
